Abstract Painting has been my main concentration since 2009. For me that translates to exploring color relationships and creating spatial contrast in nature inspired work. From time to time I attempt more representational ideas for the challenge and reward of drawing. But currently, drawing and painting remain separate in the work.
Habits or ways of working develop over time in painting, methods to get the job done. Shaking that up can be a necessary challenge calling for bold moves or sweeping gestures, working vertically or on the floor, using wet paint. When there is unwanted repetition, a different tool to get the paint to the support changes the result and gets me involved.
I find abstract work lends itself to working in series. I generally make four or more when working under 40"x40". There can be a flow in this approach which stimulates ideas, things happen that may not when working on individual canvases. Groups also generate work and encourage diptychs or triptychs, making small works more substantial. I have always employed a limited palette and occasionally add something special but really try to keep it small. I use oil paint mainly and acrylics for works on paper. MP
